Eight Below - Story of Survival, Friendship and Adventure

Eight Below, a Walt Disney Pictures film directed by Frank Marshall and written by David DiGilio, is the fictional re-imagining of the events of an ill-fated Japanese expedition to Antarctica that took place in 1958, moved forward to 1993, the last year that sled dogs were used in Antarctica. The movie was not filmed in Antarctica rather it was filmed in Smithers, British Columbia, Norway and Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.

A sled dog team of eight huskies is left alone in Antarctica when their owner, young scientist and team trainer Jerry (Paul Walker), must evacuate, in the midst of a severe storm, with his colleagues and the seriously injured professor who has funded the trip. While all humans involved were rescued later, dogs were left there on their fate as the Helicopter could not handle additional weight. Jerry intends to return the next day to rescue the dog team; however, the snowstorm and impending winter cancels all expeditions to Antarctica until the following spring. Jerry is haunted by the knowledge that the dogs have probably died while secured in their collars and chains. Of course, the dogs are more resourceful than the humans expect, and the film chronicles their survival as well as Jerry's determined attempts to find a way to return despite the moratorium on Antarctic travel.

In all, over 30 dogs were used to portray the film's eight canine characters.
