Tales from the Dugout : The Greatest True Baseball Stories Ever Told

If baseball from a fan's perspective is the answer to a lazy summer day, then Tales from the Dugout is the answer to lazy days the rest of the year. Pick it up and open to any page and you'll find the delightful yarns, quotes, foibles, and folklore that wrap the grand old game like so much twine around the innards of a baseball. Bobby Brown, Yankee third baseman of yore, explains why teammate Yogi Berra had such an unconventional strike zone; an unassuming North Carolina pitcher named Jimmy Hunter reveals the truth behind his nickname, "Catfish"; and major-league prankster Ken Griffey Jr., in a rare turn of the tables, plays the April Fool. With more than 150 anecdotes from America's national pastime, this memorable collection is the perfect antidote to rainouts and winter blues.

Founder and longtime editor of SPITBALL: THE LITERARY BASEBALL MAGAZINE, Shannon offers more than 150 of the "greatest true baseball stories ever told." All the stories involve the great and the not-so-great on and off the field. Patrick Cullen reads the stories well enough. Almost too well, at times. His diction is occasionally a bit too precise for tales told by athletes who, especially in the past, were not always known for their articulation. But he maintains the perfect breezy tone for a book of sports anecdotes.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

Unlike professional football and basketball, Major League Baseball has no cap on the amount of money a team can spend on its players, which makes it nearly impossible for "small market" clubs to compete with the behemoths in Gotham and L.A. On the other hand, as Lewis shows us in his engaging saga of the Oakland Athletics, there are always ways to win on the cheap. The hero of Lewis' tale is Oakland General Manager Billy Beane, a bust as a player but a deft judge of talent. Lewis was granted what appears to be unlimited access--he often found himself in the Oakland executive offices when a big trade was going down--and his book reads like it. He also does a wonderful job of picking the brains and explaining the motives of the baseball statistics geeks who are helping redefine the way the game will be played in the twenty-first century. With so many baseball books to choose from, it is difficult to single out a few as must-haves, but this one comes pretty close.

Catch Me If You Can

Inspired by the extraordinary true story of a brilliant young master of deception and the FBI agent hot on his trail, Catch Me If You Can stars Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio and two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks in one of the year's most acclaimed hits! From three-time Oscar winning director Steven Spielberg, Catch Me If You Can follows Frank W. Abagnale, Jr. as he successfully passes himself off as a pilot, a lawyer and a doctor - all before his 21st birthday!

Order Catch Me If You Can (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Features) for $6.99

Catch Me If You Can (Full Screen Two-Disc Special Edition) also available for $9.98

When this true-crime story first appeared in 1980, it made the New York Times bestseller list within weeks. Two decades later, it was re-released in conjunction with the film version produced by DreamWorks. In the space of five years, Frank Abagnale passed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in every state and 26 foreign countries. He did it by pioneering implausible and brazen scams, such as impersonating a Pan Am pilot (puddle jumping around the world in the cockpit, even taking over the controls). He also played the role of a pediatrician and faked his way into the position of temporary resident supervisor at a hospital in Georgia. Posing as a lawyer, he conned his way into a position in a state attorney general's office, and he taught a semester of college-level sociology with a purloined degree from Columbia University.

Order the Paperback edition of Catch Me If You Can: The True Story of a Real Fake for $10.17. Kindle edition of Catch Me If You Can also available for $7.96.

Truth, in Frank Abagnale's autobiography, is more entertaining than fiction.

What is Kindle? Should I buy it?

Kindle manufactured and distributed by Amazon is the hottest talk of date. The demand went much higher than the supply and result that the Kindles went out of stock at Amazon, and were resold on ebay by early buyers for double the original price. What is Kindle? and for whom it is meant?

Kindle is :
- A light-weight device weighing 10.3 ounces (292 grams) capable of storing about 200 book titles for you to read anytime anywhere.
- An electronic device with "Electronic Paper" technology claimed by Amazon as Revolutionary since it shows black print over white background similar to that what experienced with a Printed paper. This "Electronic Paper" screen does not glare or cause strains as experianced with Computer Displays.
- A mobile device that communicates with the Amazon store over "Amazon Whispernet" Network that currently uses Sprint's Mobile network.
- Capable of storing about 200 book titles.
- Capable of playing audio books available at audible.com. Such books need to be downloaded over internet connection and uploaded to Kindle using USB 2.0 cable.

Kindle is NOT :
- A PDF file reader. The file format Kindle supports is a proprietory format and books in that format are available with Amazon only.

Kindle is priced at $399.00 and can be purchased by following this linkand includes
- Kindle Electronic Reader
- Book Cover (value $24.99)
- Power Adapter (value $14.99)
- USB 2.0 cable (value $9.99)
The above price also includes the expenses for wireless data transfer that includes all books that you purchase and also the free reading i.e. the sample chapters and the entire wikipedia.org site that's provided over wireless network of Sprint. If you are outside the wireless network though, you will have to upload the purchased titles or so using USB 2.0 cable, the files being sent to you via email.

In addition to accessories listed above Kindle Battery (one included with the Reader) is also available for additional purchase at price of $19.99.

Amazon has also provided a document conversion facility using which you can get you personal document converted to Kindle format for FREE and get it delivered to you free of cost through email or for $0.10 per document through wireless if you are within wireless network. This service is however marked as experimental.

Now question is should you buy it? Will the price go down further?
Kindle is current out of stock and orders are being accepted in advance for delivery on First come-first serve basis when it's available, so a price reduction in near future is unlikely. Further the price also includes wreless charges which might be costing much compared to actual production cost of the equipment and as there is no competition providing similar features the cost is expected to remain same for quite sometime. However after the advance orders have been delivered there may be offers with bundled titles at no or little extra costs.

At $399.00 Amazon Kindle can be of a great use to all readers. Buy it from here.
